Understanding leather grades is essential for anyone who buys or sells leather belts, because the grade of the leather determines both the quality and the price of the final product. In this guide, we explain the main types of cowhide leather and how they compare.

Full grain leather is the highest grade. It comes from the top layer of the hide and keeps the natural grain completely intact, with all the strength, breathability, and character of the original skin. Full grain leather develops a beautiful patina over time and can last for decades if cared for properly, which is why premium belts and luxury goods are made from it. The surface may show natural marks and variations, and that is a sign of authenticity, not a defect.

Top grain leather is the second layer of the hide, sanded down to remove imperfections, and then finished to create a smooth, uniform surface. It is more affordable than full grain and is used widely in fashion belts because it is consistent in appearance and easy to maintain. It is genuine leather, but it does not develop the same rich patina as full grain.

Split leather comes from the lower layers of the hide after the top grain has been removed. It is softer and less durable, so it is usually finished with an artificial coating to look like top grain, and it is commonly used in bonded and cheaper products. Bonded leather is the lowest grade: it is made from leather fibers mixed with adhesives and pressed into sheets, so it contains only a small percentage of actual leather and does not last long in daily use.

Calf leather deserves a special mention: it comes from young cattle and is finer, softer, and more uniform than cowhide, making it a favorite for luxury dress belts. Faux leather, also called PU or vegan leather, is not leather at all, but modern high-quality PU can look very similar at a fraction of the cost.

At Hongmioo, we use full grain, top grain, and calf leather for our quality lines, and microfiber and PU for our economy lines. We always tell our customers exactly what material they are buying, and we provide material samples and certificates on request.
