A ratchet belt replaces the traditional pin buckle with a sliding mechanism. The strap carries a moulded track on its inner face, and the buckle head holds a spring-loaded pawl. Pushing the strap in closes it in small increments, so the wearer can fine-tune the fit instead of being limited to punched holes. Lifting the buckle head releases the pawl and the belt opens.

Because the mechanism does the holding, the strap material can be thinner and softer than a pin-buckle belt of the same strength. That is why ratchet belts are common in leather, PU, braided and webbing versions, and why they sell well in both formal and casual segments.

The buckle head is normally die-cast zinc alloy. Zinc alloy offers a good balance of strength, weight and cost, it takes plating well, and it can be polished, brushed, painted or PVD coated. During production the mechanism is cycled repeatedly so that the pawl and track engage smoothly before the batch is packed.
